He was a truly lovely guy with such a dry sense of humour and I last met him at an audition in Dulwich in 1988. I am pleased he has a certain immortality. Kind regards. In the 1980's I regularly wrote my own versions of Coronation Street relating to characters going back many years before the programme started. If ever I were stuck on a point I would ring Eric up and he was always more than delighted to help. He had none of the lovable charm and vulnerability of Albert Tatlock. The scene when Albert offers to give Ken and Deirdre his house to keep them with him was heartbreaking and will never leave my memory. Percy however, I wish I could forget. My granny's house with a black ring on the ceiling from the paraffin lamp during a power cut and a terracotta cat that had been glued back together on the windowsill (now on my mantlepiece). My great uncle Paddy's house with its bakelite doorknobs and a coal fire going come rain or shine. I think the happy memories come from the people who lived in these houses as much as the trinkets that were on show for best.Ciarannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2325675586997641933.post-41270602660172389362023-02-07T23:56:38.808+00:002023-02-07T23:56:38.808+00:00Pat Phoenix's hair was a work of artPat Phoenix's hair was a work of art Unluckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07302090224607942644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2325675586997641933.post-70958736791051861012022-08-31T19:50:19.570+01:002022-08-31T19:50:19.570+01:00The arrival of mousse in the 1980s had a lot to an...The arrival of mousse in the 1980s had a lot to answer for. I used to love her afternoon routine - feet up watching Sons & Daughters and Afternoon Plus, and as soon as the lodger came home from work, she'd tell him about how she'd been on her feet all day! Bless her! I'm glad the blog stirs memories of people's lives. Stan and Hilda were, at root, a great observation of everyday people.Drewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02476860681853867684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2325675586997641933.post-62422104545009550462022-02-06T21:03:17.835+00:002022-02-06T21:03:17.835+00:00Stan and Hilda were like my mum and dad! Can't you at least try?
She used to say. "Look at him, he can move fast enough if he hears pub doors unlocking"!
He used to get drunk and come in and sit back in his chair and sing sentimental song in Welsh, the first time it happened it shocked me, born and bred without walking distance of the Manchester Cathedral.
He always got round her, he used to stand up and lean forward and put his hand out;
"Come on love! I deserve a pint at least"!
When he passed away, her grief was unfathomable.
Twenty years later, just this holiday season gone. she left to join him.
I know it's just a fancy but I like to believe she sat up and rubbed her eyes and somehow he was waiting outside her mum and dad's house and they were courting again.
Thank you for letting share my thoughts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2325675586997641933.post-48464262971156989372021-11-25T20:41:52.312+00:002021-11-25T20:41:52.312+00:00I knew Paul. HV Kershaw, street producer and writer, later revealed that the snake wouldn't act on cue, despite the best efforts of its handler, and so Elsie looked in the box and discovered an apparently lifeless snake. HV Kershaw commented that the production team resigned itself to a shoal of letters from viewers asking why Elsie's response to the sight was so terrified!
